What is Spinal Decompression Therapy?

Spinal Decompression Therapy is the best non-surgical and conservative procedure for patients suffering with a number of back and neck pains. Decompression is the least invasive form of treatment for disc injuries and also the most cost effective treatment for herniated and degenerative spinal discs as well as spinal stenosis. Spinal Decompression Therapy is used to treat a variety of common back or neck pains, including:

  • Herniated lumbar disc
  • Bulging Disc
  • Spinal Stenosis
  • Degenerative Disc Disease
  • Posterior Facet Syndrome
  • Sciatica
  • Failed Back Surgery Syndrome

Spinal decompression relieves pain by creating a vacuum type suction which reverses the high pressure inside the disc and draws the bulging or herniated material back into the disc. This therapy uses traction that pulls the vertebrae apart in cycles called distraction and relaxation. Pressure is taken off the nerves and spinal discs during the procedure allowing for the flow of water and nutrients to take place.

Most patients find the process immediately relieving and also relaxing. It is not uncommon to walk into the office of SpinalCare Physical Medicine and find a patient asleep on the table while they are receiving their decompression treatment!

Is Spinal Decompression Therapy Safe and Effective?

According to the American Journal of Pain Management, non-durgical decompression has provided relief for over 86% of patients with herniated intervertebral discs.

Spinal Decompression Therapy has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) since 2001 as a treatment for disc injuries. Spinal Decompression is very safe and has minimal risk for injuring a patient. Due to the non-invasive and non-surgical nature of spinal decompression there is little to no down time or recovery time after treatment. Further, because spinal decompression is a drug-free approach to pain relief, there is no risk of becoming reliant upon potentially addictive pain killers and prescription drugs.

A typical treatment program with decompression is spread over a few weeks. If you are experiencing severe or chronic low back or neck pain, call SpinalCare Physical Medicine today at 317-272-4100. We can help!
